Swimming Lessons
American Red Cross Swimming Lessons
The Cumberland Pool learn-to-swim program is taught by Cumberland Pool American Red Cross certified lifeguards.
Skills Placement Testing
The pool staff reserves the right to test the swimming ability of any swimmer to ensure proper skill placement and to limit class size, as well as to combine classes when necessary.
Registration Details
Participants must register at the Community Center at least one week before each session for all group lessons. No classes are held on July 4.

- Session 1: June 10-20 (registration begins 5/1)
- Session 2: June 24-July 5 (registration begins 6/20)
- Session 3: July 8-18 (registration begins 7/5)
- Session 4: July 22-Aug 1 (registration begins 7/18)
- Evening Session: June 10 to July 17 (registration begins 5/1)

Lesson Types

Adult Group Lessons
Find information on classes for adults ages 18 and over with little to no previous swimming experience.

Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills
Level 1 is Introduction to Water Skills.

Level 2 - Fundamental Water Skills
Level 2 is geared toward ages 5 and above. Children learn to float and swim independently, to roll over, change direction while swimming, and begin treading water, with a continued emphasis on water safety.

Level 3 - Stroke Development
Children learn front crawl with rotary breathing, elementary backstroke, dolphin and scissors kicks, and diving with continued work on water safety.

Level 4 - Stroke Development
Children continue to develop front and back crawl and elementary backstroke; they also learn sidestroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Diving and underwater swimming are taught. Treading water and water safety continue.

Level 5 - Stroke Refinement
Children learn shallow angle dives, tuck and pike surface dives and front and back flip turns, with an emphasis on water safety skills for the swimmer and others.

Level 6 - Stroke Proficiency
Children work on stroke refinement to increase endurance, culminating in a 500-yard swim. Focus is on preparing participants for a lifetime of fitness and safety.

Parent / Child Group Lessons
These lessons are for children aged 6 to 36 months. Classes build basic water safety skills for parents and helps children become comfortable in the water. Adults are in the water with their child.

Preschool Group Lessons
Classes are for ages 3 to 5. Skills are age appropriate and emphasize water safety, survival, and foundational swimming concepts.

Teens and 'Tweens
These classes are for older swimmers with little or no swimming experience. lass will be divided into groups of six to maximize learning.
